Adynaton for Homer

The sky will extinguish its stars, and the sun

will appear shining in the folds of night,

and the sea will be a well of fresh water for men,

and the dead will come back to the land of the living,

before forgetfulness of these ancient lines

can steal from us the far-famed name of Homer.

Names

Two from Philodemus :-

1) Switching between a female name and its (neuter) diminutive:

Anth.9.570 [= no. 341 in Jay's Penguin]

2) Word-play with names and name elements, perhaps as an indicator of the transparency of compounds or awareness of an echo, associating ἔραμαι and φιλέω:

Anth. 5.115 [=
no. 333 in Jay's Penguin]

11th September 2011

A reflection from The Economist for the tenth anniversary:

"As September 11th fades into the history books, America has started to move on. The burning towers, the battle on the slopes of Tora Bora, the pyrotechnics over Baghdad, the sadistic pictures of hooded prisoners in Abu Ghraib: these have come to seem like photographs in an album, vividly remembered but no longer part of today’s reality." (this blogger's emphasis).

From The Greek Anthology: Perfume, Scholarship, Adynata

"You are the perfume of your perfume."
(loosely) Adespoton, Anth. 5.91

**
Philip of Thessalonika:

καὶ τίνος ἦν Πρωτεὺς καὶ τίς ὁ Πυγμαλίων;

A long farewell to your universe-swivelling optics,
and to all your Aristarchoid acanthologizing bookworms!
What do I care about aphelion or perihelion,
or the generations of Proteus or Pygmalion?
Clarity, clarity always! and may some tenebrous saga
wither the bones of the Hypercallimachoids!

Anth. 11.347 [Translated by Edwin Morgan as no. 474 in Peter Jay's Penguin]

Anth. 11.321.

Bucolicon Americanon

I have still to collect the parallels between the ol' standard Sleepy Time Down South and the Bucolici Graeci.
Pale moon shining on the fields below,
Folks are crooning songs soft and low,
Needn't tell me so, because I know,
It's sleepy time down south.

Soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees,
Folks down there live a life of ease,
When the twilight brings the evening breeze,
It's sleepy time down south.

Steamboats on the river a-comin' and a-goin',
Splashing the night away,
Hear those banjos ringin', the folks are all a-singin',
They dance till break of day.

Dear old southland, with its dreamy songs
Takes me back there where I belong.
How I'd love to be in mother's arms
When it's sleepy time down south.

Adynata in 70s music

Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle was covered by Glenn Campbell and, apparently, the muppets and features several instances of the trope of the adynaton: an impossibility (used to quantify the extent or the exceptional nature of something).

If I could save time in a bottle,
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
Till eternity passes away -
Just to spend them with you.

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true,
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you.

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them.
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with.

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true,
The box would be empty -
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you.

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That youre the one I want to go
Through time with.

Even Homer nods

Consider the following simile from Odyssey 20.10-16 (Odysseus is angry at his 'disloyal' maids):

"And much he debated in mind and heart, whether he should rush after them and deal death to each, or suffer them to lie with the insolent wooers for the last and latest time; and his heart growled within him. And as a bitch stands over her tender whelps growling, when she sees a man she does not know, and is eager to fight, so his heart growled within him in his wrath at their evil deeds;" (Loeb)

This one, perhaps, could have been left as the opening metaphor, but the simile has at least caused a pause for thought and blogging.

Ancient Calender Poetry and Motown

Poems which derive their subject matter and structure from the calender, such as Ovid's Fasti, find a modern counterpart in Stevie Wonder's I Just Called to Say I Love You. Direct references to days and months are mixed with allusions to festivals and seasonal changes all in calendrical sequence. There is even some astrological content.

No New Year's Day to celebrate
No chocolate covered candy hearts to give away
No first of spring
No song to sing
In fact here's just another ordinary day

No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June
But what it is, is something true
Made up of these three words that I must say to you

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

No summer's high
No warm July
No harvest moon to light one tender August night
No autumn breeze
No falling leaves
Not even time for birds to fly to southern skies

No Libra sun
No Halloween
No giving thanks to all the Christmas joy you bring
But what it is, though old so new
To fill your heart like no three words could ever do...

Rhetorical and poetic figures in popular music

Months ago, I began collecting examples of poetic and rhetorical figures in popular music, spurred on by Bill Bailey's thesis that cockney music influenced the great classical composers. Although it may not be surprising to find such figures in the corpus of the great lyricist Cole Porter, a hysteron proteron, say, would not be expected in the works of Robbie Williams. A few topoi and grammatical features began to creep in.

A further noteworthy discovery is that the tradition of catalogue poetry - so popular among the ancients - has been continued by the likes of the Beach Boys and Madonna.

ADYNATON
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away,
Until the day that 8 times 8 times 8 is 4…
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Stevie Wonder, As

I'll love you… until the twelfth of never
and that's a long, long time.
Johnny Mathis

ALLITERATION
It's just another manic Monday

Baubles, Bangles and Beads: hear how they jing, jing-a-ling-a

On the ground your glove I found
With a note addressed to me.
It read dear love I've done you wrong,
Now I must set you free.
Moody River

CHIASMUS
Momma said, 'There'd be days like this, there'd be days like this,' my momma said.

ECPHRASIS
Looking through some photographs
I found inside a drawer
I was taken by a photograph of you.
There were one or two
I know that you would have liked a little more
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true.

You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes.
Jackson Browne, Fountain of Sorrow

Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill
But she'll walk a thunderbird like she's standin' still
She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored.
She'll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got.
She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar
And if that ain't enough to make you flip your lid
There's one more thing – I got the pink slip, daddy.
The Beach Boys, Little Deuce Coup

EMPHASIS
? Don't you know, little fool, you never can win?
Cole Porter, I've Got You Under My Skin

EPIDIORTHOSIS
You're my first, my last, my everything.
Barry White

EPITHALAMIUM
Girl, I heard you're getting married,
Heard you're getting married, this time you're really sure.
And this is the end. They say you really mean it.
This guy's the one that makes you feel so safe, so sane and so secure.
And, baby, if he loves you more than me,
Maybe it's the best thing,
Maybe it's the best thing for you.
But it's the worst that could happen to me.
Jim Webb, The Worst that Could Happen

But here are some of music's pioneers
That time will not allow us to forget.
For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo

And with a voice like Ella's ringing out
There's no way the band can lose.
Stevie Wonder, Sir Duke

LOCUS AMOENUS
Beside the garden wall,
when stars are bright,
You are in my arms.
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
Of paradise where roses grew.
Though I dream in vain, in my heart you will remain,
My stardust melody,
The memory of love's refrain.
Star dust

In a mountain greenery,
Where God paints the scenery,
Just two crazy people together.
While you love your lover,
Let blue skies be your coverlet.
When it rains we'll laugh at the weather.
And if you're good, I'll search for wood,
So you can cook... while I stand looking.
Beans could get no keener reception in a beanery.
Bless our mountain greenery home!
