The great collector of Greek epigrams was also a composer. There follows the dedication from his Griechische Grabgedichte:
MEINER UNVERGESSLICHEN MUTTER
TO MY UNFORGETTABLE MOTHER
who bore me and taught me to love all that is fine, I dedicate this small piece of kindness in return for so many: it may only be a (little) book full of the grief of those who lived formerly, but to you, dear mother, it is a memorial of loveliness.

Lessons from Lexicographers
From the end of the preface to Sullivan's Lexicon to Achilles Tatius:
"I dedicate this book to the memory of my father, who taught me long ago by trout-streams in Ireland the optimism without which it would never have been begun and the perseverance without which it would never have been finished."
