A epigram from Peek

The great collector of Greek epigrams was also a composer. There follows the dedication from his Griechische Grabgedichte:

MEINER UNVERGESSLICHEN MUTTER

ἥ μ᾿ἔτεκεν καὶ πάντα φιλεῖν ἐδίδαξε τὰ καλά,
τήνδ᾿ ὀλίγην τόσσων ἀντιτίθημι χάριν,
βιβλίον ἔμπλειον μὲν ἄχους προτέρων ποτ᾿ ἐόντων,
σοὶ δέ, φίλη μῆτερ, μνημόσυνον φιλίας.

TO MY UNFORGETTABLE MOTHER

who bore me and taught me to love all that is fine, I dedicate this small piece of kindness in return for so many: it may only be a (little) book full of the grief of those who lived formerly, but to you, dear mother, it is a memorial of loveliness.
